CARRIAGE TOWN NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

Project Description:
The Carriage Town Neighborhood Association works for the comprehensive revitalization of its community, with the core belief that the neighborhood historic homes are a tremendous resource in reviving the walk-to-work concept of residential life in downtown Flint. Carriage Town is nestled between downtown Flint, the University of Michigan-Flint, Atwood Stadium, Kettering University, Hurley Medical Center and the new University Park Development off Saginaw Street. All Carriage Town initiatives involve significant hours of commitment and support from neighborhood volunteers and local stakeholders, as Carriage Town residents believe that physical redevelopment partnered with community investment creates the most sustainable results.

Two significant community revitalization projects recently took place in the Carriage Town Historic District. The Carriage Town Historic Neighborhood Association, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, has completed the restoration of the Jackson/Hardy House (on the corner of Garland and Third Avenue) and the creation of the Carriage Town Community Garden (on the south side of Third Avenue between Lyon and Mason Streets).

The Jackson/Hardy House serves as the new Carriage Town Historic Neighborhood Association Design Center and nonprofit offices. The structure is used for office/meeting space, a historic rehabilitation resource center and as a facility for special events.

The goal of the Carriage Town Community Garden located on Third Avenue is to take spaces left vacant by the demolition of homes, and adaptively re-use the green space as entertainment space for the community. This garden includes new trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals for community residents to enjoy. Pathways will be cut though the garden where there will eventually be seating areas, garden sculptures and water features.

Background Information:
Carriage Town is a residential historic district, often referred to as the birthplace of General Motors. Geographically, Carriage Town is the point of origin for the City of Flint. Civic-minded residents of the neighborhood who were organizing for community action against neglect and decay chose its name in 1982. The Carriage Town name best describes the majority of original housing built when Flint was the ‘Carriage Capitol’ of the United States. This housing sheltered workers in this original walk-to-work neighborhood.
