Project Description:
The Genesee County Land Bank acquired the former Durant Hotel located in the center of downtown Flint in 2005.The eight-story, 250 room hotel is currently being evaluated for possible housing use including student housing. The hotel sits at the northern fringe of downtown Flint and is adjacent to the University of Michigan-Flint campus between S. Saginaw Street and M.L. King Boulevard. Background Information:
The hotel was built in 1920 and named in honor of Flint’s favorite son, William C. Durant, who led the early success of Buick and in 1908 created General Motors. Durant had a suite of eight rooms in the hotel. When it opened, the Durant was the largest and grandest hotel in Flint. The first floor had a drug store, shoe store, haberdashery, café and a branch of the Genesee Bank when it was opened. The hotel has been vacant for 32 years and has been the subject of numerous development ideas.
