Building History:
The former First National Bank and Trust Company building was constructed in 1925 and was designed in the Neo-Classical Beaux Arts style. The façade is sheathed in glazed terra cotta and was once topped with a massive ornamental cornice. Much of the early wealth that flowed through the carriage industry and the fledgling General Motors Corporation came through this bank. The First National Bank was the first bank formed in Flint after the “wildcat” era of banking in the Michigan territory. It brought stability to the community with the help of one of Flint’s most prominent citizens, Arthur G. Bishop. A.G. Bishop was president of the Bank and also sat on the first Board of Directors of General Motors, serving in this position until his death in 1941. The Board of Directors of the Bank was made up of prominent citizens of Flint including Charles Nash, founder of the American Motor Company, Fred Aldridge of the Durant Dort Carriage Company which would later become General Motors, and others in the merchant, farming and lumbering industries. The building was one of the first “skyscrapers” using a steel frame, encased in masonry and was one of several that transformed downtown Flint from a tiny low-rise village into a high rise commerce center at a time when Flint was the fastest growing city in the United States.
