FLINT CULTURAL CENTER

Project Description:
From 2001 through 2002, the Flint Cultural Center (FCC) staff and stakeholders conducted intensive planning with two goals: to develop a new Strategic Plan for the Flint Cultural Center Corporation (FCCC), whose member organizations are Flint Youth Theatre, Longway Planetarium, Sloan Museum and The Whiting; and to create a conceptual Master Plan for the Flint Cultural Center's thirty acre campus, which includes the above organizations plus the Flint Institute of Arts and the Flint Institute of Music. The master plan creates a conceptual framework for future improvements to the campus, including:
  • Enhancement of a sense of place and improved accessibility.

  • Creation of a more inviting pedestrian environment and community gathering place through
improved aesthetics and function of lighting, signage, landscaping, and walkways.

  • Expansion of parking and building spaces to meet current and future audience demand.

  • Addition of a Visitors Center providing centralized information and ticketing, a café, and a place
for visiting school groups to have lunch.

Background Information:
The Flint Cultural Center, established in 1957 by community leaders, is located in a unique, 30-acre, campus-like setting, east of downtown Flint and consisting of nine diverse cultural institutions. Four of those - Bower Theater, Longway Planetarium, Sloan Museum and Whiting Auditorium (home of the Showcase Series, Flint Symphony Orchestra and Once Upon A Time Series) - have been run by the Flint Cultural Center Corporation since 1994, a nonprofit management group that is responsible for all the land and buildings. Also located in the Center are the Flint Institute of Arts, the Flint Institute of Music, the Flint Public Library, Sarvis Center (part of Flint Schools) and Flint Youth Theatre - also a program of Flint Community Schools.
