FLINT RIVER TRAIL

Description of Project:
Currently, the Friends of the Flint River Trail have plans in place to promote greater use of the trail through improved safety, maintenance, and publicity. In addition, the organization is working towards improving the facilities along the trail and extending the trail’s length, moving toward a city/county trail system. The Flint River Trail is one component of an overall Flint River District Strategic Plan being conducted by Sasaki Associates. In the plan, the trail would be extended from downtown Flint through Kettering University to the Mott Park neighborhood. Additional components of the Flint River District Plan include the development of a Kettering Research Park including student housing and “campus town”; river redevelopment including park and green space development; and in-fill development including retail, commercial and housing redevelopment. The plan is focused on the area encompassing Third Avenue (north), Kearsley Street (south), Grand Traverse (west) and Saginaw Street (east).

General Information:

The Flint River Trial is a multi-use trial running along one or both sides of the Flint River from downtown Flint through Flint and Genesee County Parks to the City of Genesee. The trail is mostly asphalt with some yet to be developed areas on roads or dirt tracks. The trail is suitable for walking, jogging, and/or biking. The trail can be accessed from the Flint Farmers’ Market just west of I-475. Scheduled group outings take place every Sunday from May through October at 2 p.m.
