FLINT RIVERFRONT REGENERATION PROJECT

Project Description:
Sasaki Associates has developed several redevelopment and land use strategies in downtown Flint, including the Flint Cultural Center, Downtown Flint business district, University of Michigan - Flint Campus, and the Flint River District (Flint River and surrounding area from UM-Flint to Kettering University). The Flint River District is by far the most aggressive strategic plan thus far and could have a dramatic economic effect on the downtown Flint area. The plan is focused on the area encompassing Third Avenue (north), Kearsley Street (south), Grand Traverse (west) and Saginaw Street (east). The key elements of the project include the following components:

  • University Boulevard (Enhancement of Third Avenue connecting Kettering University with the University of Michigan-Flint)

  • Kettering Research Park (Inclusion of research park, student housing, and “campus town”)

  • River Redevelopment (Develop parks and green space along Flint River including a park as part of the Atwood Stadium complex)

  • In-fill Development (Retail and commercial redevelopment along Third Avenue and the Flint River)

Project Details:
  • Develop gateways to the Flint River District

  • Redevelop Third Avenue to include new lighting, signage, and “retail/commercial/housing modes”

  • Develop Waterfront park next to Atwood Stadium

  • Develop a variety of housing alternatives along the Flint River along Bluff and Stone Streets

  • Redevelop riverfront to entice residents to utilize the river

  • Develop Research Park at Kettering University

  • Develop “campus town” near Kettering
