Project Description:
Another exciting development in downtown Flint is the restoration of the Stockton House on Ann Arbor Street. The new facility, called the Stockton Center, will be completed in the summer of 2006. It will include professional offices as well as the Stockton Center at Spring Grove Museum and Library.
The Stockton Center at Spring Grove is committed to historical preservation, environmental enhancement and beautification of the Flint community. It is especially dedicated to the recreational development of ‘Spring Grove’, the extensive green area located behind the Stockton Center building. Spring Grove was originally the ‘pleasure grounds’ of Colonel and Mrs. Stockton. Working closely with the Genesee County Land Bank, plans are under way to remove a century’s worth of rubbish from the site, to restore native plant life to the area, to enhance the wetlands surrounding the perpetual spring that gave the site its name and to develop walking and bicycle paths there.
Background Information:
Built in 1872, the house was originally the home of Colonel Thomas and Maria Stockton. The Stockton family lived there for 50 years until 1921 when the property was sold to the Archdiocese of Detroit for the construction of Saint Joseph Hospital. Both the original house and the huge three story addition built by the Sisters of Saint Joseph are being completely restored.
The museum will focus on the Stockton family and their contributions to the development of the City of Flint and will feature the Colonel’s military career in the Mexican-American War and the War Between the States. The library is especially appropriate to the site because Maria Stockton was a founder and first president of the Ladies Library Association, which later became the Flint Public Library. The Stockton Center will host events highlighting the Victorian era, antiques, gardening, architecture, local history and the Civil War.
