Description of Initiative:
The opportunity for District Visioning emerged after discussions with the Flint Cultural Center Corporation (FCCC) and Mott Community College (MCC) revealed that each organization was planning master plans simultaneously but independently. A district visioning process was developed to encourage collaborative work between all organizations, which would strengthen the historic, cultural and educational aspects of the district as a whole. With that in mind several collaborative projects are expected to take place in the near future including:
Shared enhancement of the greenway along Gilkey Creek, connecting to Kearsley Park and Burroughs Park
Creation of a design for signs, lighting and other beautification features throughout the District that will contribute to a unified appearance
Improving access for pedestrians and bicyclers
Shared parking
Background Information:
In the fall of 2005, the Ruth Mott foundation embarked on a master planning process for Applewood. Out of that process came three objectives:
Design a solution to minimize the frequent flooding of Gilkey Creek
Create a long-term Master Plan that will guide Applewood’s use and preservation over the next 15 years
Embark on a collaborative planning process with its neighbors including Mott Community College and the Flint Cultural Center campus.
The Ruth Mott Foundation is committed to improving community vitality through it grantmaking and public programs in Flint and Genesee County. Their areas of focus include arts and culture, beautification, health promotion and special initiatives. To further its mission, the Foundation also operates public programs at Applewood that support these interests and demonstrate environmental stewardship.
