COMMUNITY FOUNDATION BUILDING
Description of Project:
In partnership with Uptown Six and Uptown Reinvestment Corporation, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF) has agreed to jointly own and renovate the buildings located at the corner of West First and South Saginaw Streets in Downtown Flint. CFGF offices will be relocated to the second floor of this building when renovations are complete.
To offset the increased financial commitment to operate a larger space, the C.S. Mott Foundation, a partner in the project has provided an endowment of $1.3 million to offset any additional operating costs associated with the relocation.
The renovation of the historic building will cost approximately $2 million, a cost to be shared by the partners. In addition to CFGF offices on the second floor, plans call for the first floor of the building to be leased to commercial tenants and the third floor to be developed as two residential lofts. The project will begin in mid-March and is expected to be complete in 2008.
Building Background:
Businesses previously located at the new Community Foundation Building site include, most recently, Dale Health Foods and Bakers Drug Store. Prior to that, these buildings housed L.G. Haig Shoes, Paris Candy Co. and a dentist office.
Organization Background: The Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF), established in 1988, serves the common good in Genesee County – building a strong community by engaging people in philanthropy and developing the community’s permanent endowment – now and for generations to come. In 2006, CFGF awarded over $5.5 million in grants to support local community projects, organizations and scholarships. CFGF serves Flint and all of Genesee County, including its geographic affiliate funds in Clio, Davison, Fenton, Flushing and Grand Blanc.
