CULTIVATING OUR COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

Description of Project:
Keep Genesee County Beautiful is taking the lead in “cultivating” a new way of thinking in our community. Within the next two years the project will begin to grow in neighborhoods, businesses, organizations and residents as they come together to promote the community as a vibrant, clean, and attractive place to live and do business.

With the use of key planting materials the community will be in bloom throughout the year from the downtown Flint area . . . to outlying communities, and from business properties . . .to neighborhoods.

In addition to in-kind donations and partnerships, the Ruth Mott Foundation is providing the grant for the project. The project is a partnership between Keep Genesee County Beautiful, the Ruth Mott-Applewood, and the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Project Details:
  • Sixteen beautification gateway projects will begin sprouting up in the spring of 2007. The installation and maintenance of the projects will be sponsored by businesses and organizations.

  • Five elementary school gateway projects and education programs will be focused in the Flint area.

  • Local communities and area businesses will be encouraged to participate in the project by utilizing “how-to-manuals” and the suggested planting materials.
  • Applewood will provide “demonstration gardens” for the Cultivating our Community project to showcase how to use the suggested plant materials.

  • A plant palette chosen for its hardiness has been selected which will be utilized in all gateway projects and will be encouraged for use by businesses, homeowners, schools and neighborhood clubs. This plant selection will begin to “brand” the community in a year-long display of color.

  • More than $1-million in additional grants and donations will support the Cultivating our Community project.
