METAWANENEE HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Description of Project:
Salem Housing has embarked on a community development project that will soon change the urban landscape of a distressed neighborhood near downtown Flint. Using MSHDA Low Income Housing Tax Credits, 24 units of affordable rental housing are being built between Wood Street, M.L. King Avenue, and Garland Street. The development consists of 14 single family homes and 5 duplex units. The in-fill development will create an excellent gateway to the Kings Wood/Metawanenee Hills neighborhood. It will also add and maintain green space in the community. The units will be superior to most other rental housing options found in the Flint market and will include garages, private porches, and yards for the residents. The development is a mixture of 2, 3, and 4 bedroom homes.

The project is a partnership between Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the Genesee County Land Bank, and Salem Housing Community Development Corporation.

Background Information:
Salem Housing improves family living conditions by providing safe, decent and affordable housing for families of limited income, and acts as a catalyst to restoring neighborhoods. It provides the support and encouragement necessary to increase self-sufficiency and independence as families move toward their goal of successful homeownership.

Since its founding in 1984, Salem Housing has been instrumental in implementing a comprehensive community planning initiative designed to re-energize the tightly knit urban fabric of Salem Housing’s neighborhoods.
