BROWN SUGAR CAFE

Description of Project:
The first project completed by Uptown Developments, LLC was the former Economy Shoes Building located at 432 S. Saginaw Street. The 3-story building was gutted and retrofitted for the first of many mixed-use developments the partnership is developing in downtown Flint. The building includes the Brown Sugar Café,

The Brown Sugar Café, a coffee shop and internet cafe will occupy the ground floor space fronting Saginaw Street, while Sorensen Gross Construction and Anteon Incorporated will occupy office space and a 1-bedroom, 1,200 square foot loft apartment will anchor the third floor.

The project was financed through conventional bank financing, developer equity, grants from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (property acquisition), and the nonprofit community (façade improvement program).

Building Background:
The Victorian-era building was constructed in the late 1800s, but has a vintage 1920s facade designed in the Art Moderne style. The façade consists of crimson red brick and oversized windows. The Economy Shoe store operated out of this building for nearly 100 years, eventually going out of business in the 1980s.
