Hurley Medical Center Expansion & Neighborhood Plan

Description of Plan:
Over the next two to 10 years, Hurley Medical Center has plans to create a new wing for an expanded emergency department, new doctors’ offices, and a pediatric tower with a separate entrance for families.

In addition, the hospital is looking at enhancing the neighborhoods around the area to improve its image as a leading medical center. Hurley recently demolished 18 unredeemable houses and owns dozens of other properties that it hopes will become part of an emerging, vibrant neighborhood. Recently they surveyed Hurley employees to find out if there was interest in living closer to the hospital. Twenty-seven percent of their employees indicated that they would be interested in a “live and work” neighborhood.

Additional projects are currently in progress to enhance the neighborhoods adjacent to or near Hurley Medical Center which will have a major impact on Hurley’s revitalization efforts. These include the:

Stone Street Project – In-fill new housing to fit the character of the historic Carriage Town Neighborhood along Grand Traverse Street and Third Avenue.

Berridge Townhouse and Loft Project – The redevelopment of a historic hotel and an adjacent home into 21 town homes and lofts and four apartments. The gated project will include an outdoor courtyard and is expected to be complete in mid 2008.

Manhattan Place Loft Apartments – The area’s first loft-style living option originally developed in the early 90s is in the process of being redeveloped into 21 lofts and future condominium units featuring Jacuzzis, fireplaces, garden patios, and garages.

Atwood Stadium – A downtown landmark built in the 1920s is being restored and is expected to be a key element in the revitalization of downtown Flint and become an important venue for students at the local universities and colleges.

Third Avenue Redevelopment – With the help of a federal grant Third Avenue has been turned into a boulevard and will be renamed University Boulevard to enhance the traffic flow between the University of Michigan-Flint and Kettering University.

University Park Estates – The first new market-rate housing development in 30 years in downtown Flint has recently been completed featuring tax incentives for homeowners and homes adjacent to park-like settings.
