HEALTH & RECREATION The Crim Festival of Races brings racing enthusiasts from all over the world “to the bricks” in downtown Flint every August. In addition, the downtown area provides a scenic riverfront trail from Riverbank Park through the University of Michigan-Flint campus . . . past the Flint Farmers’ Market to Kearsley Park and the Flint Cultural Center. Organized biking and walking events bring residents to downtown Flint as well as the social and sporting events held at Kearsley Park, one of the city’s oldest parks and Atwood Stadium. |

Atwood Stadium

Atwood Stadium was dedicated in 1929 and served as the center for city-wide activities. The stadium is currently being restored. Atwood Stadium, located within a short walking distance from Kettering University and the University of Michigan-Flint along the Flint River, is considered a key anchor to the Flint River District Strategic Plan.

The first building on the Mott Community College campus was the Ballenger Field House which was completed in 1954. The Ballenger Field House provides a safe, educational environment for individual fitness evaluation and training. Microfit Fitness Profile testing aids participants in setting realistic, personal fitness goals. The workout program utilizes Universal Super Circuit equipment for strength and cardiopulmonary/aerobic programming. The fitness center also includes the Durham Natatorium Pool.

The Crim Festival of Races is ranked as one of the top world-class races in its league. From volunteers to participants to spectators, Crim pride is visible across thousands of faces during the fourth weekend of August- year after year. In addition, the Crim Festival of Races, provides numerous year-long activities and event promoting fitness for adults and children including the Crim Feelin’ Good Mileage Program, Crim Kids Classic, Crim Kids Neighborhood Running Clubs, and Crim Fitness and Training Program.

Flint River Trail

The Flint River Trail is a multi-use trail running along one or both sides of the Flint River from downtown Flint through Flint and Genesee County Parks to the City of Genesee. The trail is mostly asphalt with some yet to be developed areas on roads or dirt tracks. The trail is suitable for walking, jogging, and /or biking. Bike enthusiasts are encouraged to join the Friends of the Flint River Trail every Sunday, May through October at 2pm at the Flint Farmers’ Market as they ride the 8-mile loop. Market Walks are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30am starting at the fishing peer across from the Flint Farmers’ Market. The trail is accessible from the Flint Farmers’ Market or Carpenter Road.

Kearsley Park

Kearsley Park is a historic treasure in the heart of Flint and is the site for several major community events including the Jazz Festival and the Shakespeare Festival. Established in 1917, it is one of the city’s oldest parks and has the distinction of having been developed by world-renowned landscape architect, Warren H. Manning through the patronage of automobile pioneer J. Dallas Dort. The 57-acre park has two large barrier free playgrounds, regulation baseball field, sledding hill, natural amphitheater, picnic shelter and pavilion. A pedestrian trail links the park to the Flint River trail. Soccer fields will be added to the park in the near future.

The Recreation Center at the University of Michigan-Flint is available for students and the residents of Genesee County. The newly renovated Lower Level Fitness Room features fitness classes including martial arts, spinning, Pilates, step aerobics and kickboxing, cardio, and yoga. The center also offers an intramural program, massages, personal training and pool. The facility can also be rented for parties and events.
